Due to a recent internal promotion, the New Haven Free Public Library seeks a Business and Nonprofit Librarian for Ives Squared, our center for innovation and collaboration at the Ives Main Library that opened summer 2018. As an anchor institution in the Elm City Innovation Collaborative (ECIC), Ives Squared is designed to inspire and augment the vibrant civic and entrepreneurial culture of the New Haven community with the Tinker Lab, a makerspace; the Exchange, for co-working, entrepreneurship, and small business development; the Switchboard, for in-person questions and information; and a Café.
This is a professional position beyond entry-level. Incumbents are expected to have acquired the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the positions requirements at a full level of competence.
The current vacant assignment entails implementing collaborative and active learning strategies and programs for small businesses, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and adult lifelong learners; offering workshops and one-on-one instruction in business research, creative software applications (i.e. Adobe Creative Suite), entrepreneurship, and business growth; fostering collaborative partnerships within the New Haven economic ecosystem; raising awareness about resources and services in the library through outreach efforts; managing a special collection of resources for entrepreneurs and nonprofits; and providing innovative information services to meet the needs of a diverse, urban adult population.
The successful candidate will be current with the latest library, business, and technology trends; have previous experience working directly with small businesses and nonprofits; provide reference services, career resources, and become familiar with basic small scale manufacturing makerspace technologies with training; foster collaboration between makerspace and entrepreneurial opportunities; have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; maintain a professional commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; and value teamwork. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formulates and executes on-line data base searches via on-line information retrieval systems.
- Conducts in-service training workshops and prepares instructional material. Assists in the training of entry level librarians and support staff.
- Reviews and revises the work of other catalogers.
- Has responsibility of operation of a special collection and/or service.
- Includes all duties of a Librarian I.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Ability to organize and maintain a specialized library collection or service within a department;
- Experience with a variety of on-line databases and the ability to apply this knowledge in planning and implementation of research or catalog work;
- Ability to evaluate and advise on the disposition of reference questions, or on matters of cataloging practice;
- Ability to instruct and train Librarian I and support staff.
This is a General Fund, “Non Tested” position.
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3144, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Bargaining agreements available to review HERE.
General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 10% of pay.
