Library Director

The Town of Shelburne, Vermont, is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking leader to serve as Director of the Pierson Library.

Located in the heart of Shelburne Village, Pierson Library is a vibrant and highly valued community resource where people come to learn, connect, discover, and engage with one another. Operating from an award-winning contemporary facility, the Library has experienced significant growth in community use since the building opened in 2019 and is supported by an experienced staff, engaged Board of Trustees, strong community partnerships, and enthusiastic public support.

The Position

The Library Director serves as the Library’s chief executive and provides strategic and operational leadership. Working in partnership with the Board of Trustees, the Director will lead an experienced staff; oversee Library services, programs, collections, technology, finances, and facilities; build strong relationships throughout the community and Town government; and ensure the Library continues to evolve in response to the needs of Shelburne.

Key areas of responsibility include:

• Providing strategic leadership and translating the Library’s strategic priorities into effective operations and measurable goals;
• Leading, supporting, and developing Library staff and fostering a positive, collaborative workplace culture;
• Ensuring excellent, welcoming, accessible, and responsive services, programs, collections, and patron experiences;
• Developing and managing operating and capital budgets and planning for long-term organizational, technology, and facility needs;
• Serving as a visible community leader and building strong relationships with patrons, community organizations, schools, businesses, municipal partners, and other stakeholders;
• Partnering effectively with the Board of Trustees, Town Manager, Selectboard, and Town staff; and
• Ensuring effective management of the Library facility, administrative systems, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

A Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science is required, along with progressively responsible experience in library administration, organizational leadership, budgeting, and staff supervision.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative and thoughtful leader with strong financial, administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills. They will understand contemporary public library services and be equally comfortable setting organizational direction, navigating complex issues, building community relationships, and jumping in to work alongside staff when needed.

Experience working with a governing board, municipal government, facilities management, and library technology is highly desirable.

Shelburne is a community of approximately 8,000 residents on the shores of Lake Champlain, just south of Burlington. The town combines the character of a historic Vermont village with easy access to the cultural, educational, recreational, and employment opportunities of the greater Burlington area, the Champlain Valley, and the Green Mountains.

Salary: $90,000–$110,000
